Perspectives on Dental Implants -- An Exclusive Interview With Dr. Michael Sonick

New York, NY (PRWeb) March 28, 2007 -- As the leading online resource for dental implants, OsseoNews.com (http://www.osseonews.com) is pleased to announce to the publication of part one of our two-part interview with Michael Sonick, DDS, Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. A renowned educator and clinical researcher, Dr. Sonick is a Guest Lecturer for the International Dental Program at New York University School of Dentistry, a former Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, and a frequent lecturer on periodontics, dental implants and practice management for educational programs around the world. Dr. Sonick spoke with OsseoNews.com about his perspective on some of the important topics in implant dentistry.

On the highly-charged subject of general practitioners placing dental implants, Dr. Sonick had this to say: “Many undergraduate dental programs have a requirement for placing and restoring implants, as do most general practice residencies. I think this should be augmented with more training and experience in continuing education courses. I have been fortunate to have become involved in the training of general practitioners, periodontists as well as oral surgeons in the implant surgery. The results have been very positive.”

Dr. Sonick emphasized that irrespective of ones dental training, communicating with patients is still a key factor for dental implant success. Dr. Sonick explained, “Implant surgery and restorations are complex issues. You need to be able to communicate effectively without intimidating or confusing the patient and still convey useful salient information. I think this is where many dentists falter.”

As regards to the controversial subject of Immediate Extraction, Placement and Loading of Dental Implants, Dr. Sonick was quick to point out that, “we have to recognize that the patient wants this all done as soon as possible. Sometimes we can give the patient what they want, an expedient restoration. However, if the risk of implant failure is increased, we often must stage the treatment.”

Since aesthetics is such a key factor in dental implant treatment, Dr. Sonick was also quick to point out one of the key mistakes he sees in dental implant placement made in the aesthetic zone. Dr. Sonick explains that, “One of the more frequent errors that I see involves placement of an implant to replace a maxillary central incisor. This implant should not be centered in the mesiodistal plane. This leads to an aesthetic failure.”

How To Save A Lot Of Money On Denture Implants
Denture implants are becoming a more popular alternative to traditional dentures because they give a person the ability to chew almost as if they had their original teeth. Dentists are able to accomplish this by placing permanent posts into the persons jaw bone. The implant procedure requires a minimum of two posts to be effective, but the more posts that are implanted will give the person more stability. After the posts are inserted into the jaw, the patient is then given time to heal, after which, they are fitted for new "snap in" dentures. These new dentures will simply snap into place and hold firmly, unlike denture adhesives that you may have had to use in the past.
